"As a man thinks in his heart so is he." Prov. 23:7. Therefore it is imperative to receive good instruction in the Word so that we may have our hearts transformed to think like God thinks. The Bible tells us, "be not conformed to this world, but be transformed!" It then tells us how; "by the renewing of our minds." Rom 12:2. Our job is to get the Word in us, and then the Word will do the work. But this happens only when we understand it correctly! That is why the Lord gave us gifted and anointed teachers in the body of Christ; To effectively sow His Word into us. Though the world throws it’s problems at us, the Word of God teaches us how to face each and every situation of life and to do so victoriously and with Joy. The Lord did not say that we just have to put up with the problems in the world. He said that "We are to be more than conquerors through Him who loved us!" Rom. 8:37 As we hear the Word through anointed teaching, it comes alive inside of us and begins the transformation process. Hallelujah! Good teaching brings life! Good teaching will set you free! Come sit under the teaching at Agathos, and you can be assured to see more victory and more joy in every aspect of your life!

Self-Confidence vs. God-Confidence

Having a model is a key to learning humility. There is no greater model than our Lord, as He came not for His own glory but to do the will of the Father. Despite His Deity, Jesus "made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men." Jesus humbled Himself and became obedient to The Father - even to the point of dying on the cross. As with Jesus, when we give ourselves entirely to God, we move from self-confidence to God-confidence.

Faith + Patience = Inheriting the Promises

Understanding how faith works allows us to act on it. Faith comes naturally when we are aware of God's Promises and our position in Christ. When faith wells up in our hearts, we clarify the target for our faith and then release our faith with our words. Not every promise comes to pass immediately. Adding patience to your faith can take you further into the Promises of God.

Pictures of Humility and Pride

There are two main ways that we can cultivate humility: directly through studying and cultivating humility itself, or, indirectly, through understanding and resisting pride. Humility is the absence of pride. Pride and humility are both mirrors - they reflect how we view ourselves and the world around us. Pride is self-made and self-focused. A picture of humility is "us in a crowd." Contrary to that, all pride sees is itself. Humility is acutely circumspect. Pride is acutely self-absorbed. Humility does not have anything to prove, only someone to please. Humility does "the best I can with what I have!"

Humility Will Not Leave You Behind

Humility will not leave you behind in life – it will actually propel you forward, as it will invoke the grace of God, for “God resists the proud but gives Grace to the humble” (James 4:6, 1Pet. 5:5). True humility is NOT talent denial. False humility is pride in disguise. Humility is the original design for our hearts; pride is the intruder. True humility simply sees yourself accurately. Pride is pure deception - it believes that this world is all about "me!" We are often so worried about protecting and promoting ourselves that we don't care for others. We think "if I don't take care of myself, who will?" God says "just love them and I will take care of you."

Humility vs. Pride

Saint Augustine said "It was pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that makes men as angels." Lucifer's fall from Heaven was predicated by pride. Our salvation (receiving God's grace) is preceded by humility. Pride is the desire to be in control, which is to be "as God" over our own lives. But humility is the enemy of pride! Humility is beautiful, protective, and powerful.

Andrew Murray, prolific Christian author, said the #1 characteristic that all Christians should be known by is humility. So what does God say about humility? We may be surprised about some biblical aspects of humility. For instance, humility is not "head down" or "tail between legs." This sermon series is meant to provide a chance to renew our minds according to what the Word of God says about humility.

God's Love + God's Promises = Faith

Faith is not just a theological concept; it is for action! Our possession of the promises of God is not automatic, but instead by faith! Therefore, for the believer, faith is a way of life. All of God's promises are “yes” for the believer (2 Cor. 1:20). Your access to all of God’s promises is not based on your obedience, but on the obedience of Christ and being IN Christ. In other words, you are a co-heir with Christ! When we realize God’s love and see His promises, faith comes naturally.

God is fine with us having money - He just doesn't want money to have us. Our treasure will be where we believe our provision is from. The tithe is a powerful tool that God gives us to keep our hearts set on Him as our source of provision.

What happened to the Israelites happened as examples for us. So if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall. The Fear of the Lord is a good thing. Rev 22:12 says "my reward is with me to give to every one according to his work." Our work is to possess the land promised by God. To turn His Words into our worlds. Two Israelites made it, the millions of others did not. Whose example will you follow?

3 Types of "Works"

The New Testament talks about three kinds of "works." Good works are good works with good motives. Bad works are good works with wrong motives. Ugly works are sinful works. There are no works to do FOR right standing with God, but there are plenty of works to do BECAUSE OF right standing with God! God is not asking for our ability. God is just asking for our availability.
