How do I Hear God's Voice?

By Erin Rollins

Have you noticed that there is little to no teaching in scripture about how to hear God's voice? Yet, have you ever had someone say to you "I don't know how to hear God."

The only thing that I have seen in scripture that talks about HOW to hear God is Jesus saying “You hear Him!”

"My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me." John 10:27
If you were in a gathering of some kind and a child started screaming from another room, every parent in the room would immediately pay attention but only one of them would get up.  Why?  Because they know their kid's voice. Think about it. You have a parent or a grandparent or someone that you know well, a husband, a wife. You can be in a huge crowded room and you can hear their voice from across the room and know that it is them. How do you know that? No one taught you.  There are other types of learning besides that which we gain through teaching.

You hear God.  The question is do you recognize it?

The only other thing that's talked about in scripture is He's not the only voice talking to you.

"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world." 1 John 4:1

And so that's why John says, "Test the spirits," because you don't always know which spirit is talking to you. It might be your own desire. It might be a demonic presence. It might be the voice of your culture. But God talks to you. Start with that assumption. And if you have trouble knowing when it's Him, get around people who have done it for a while. And then say out loud the things that you think you're hearing from Him, and they will help you to start to realize, “oh, that was Him.” Amen.

We have been meeting in our Prophetic Company for around 18 months now. When we started that group, a lot of people would not participate much because they were still in the process of recognizing that they could hear Him. . A community like that one - where others are seeking to hear the voice of God and sharing what they hear with each other -  is a great place to test out what you hear and begin to understand “that was God, that voice that I heard was God.”

This morning someone shared with me that they’ve always had this voice in their head that they’ve ignored.  Then someone told them prophetically “That voice you’re always hearing - that’s God.”  And once they started to pay attention, they realized it was true.  That’s a game changer!
